Qujing in Brief

Situated in the eastern part of YunnanProvince, QujingMunicipality is the place where rises the PearlRiver---- the longest river in South China. It is 130 kilometers away from Kunming. It covers an area of 28900km2, with a population of 5,945,000. Under its jurisdiction are seven counties, one city and one district. The urban area of the whole municipality is 147 km2 and the urban population of 1,629,600. Qilin District, where the municipal government is seated, covers an urban area of 32.2 km2, with an urban population of 380,000. The urbanization rate is 55.8%. In 2005 its GDP reached 44.1 billion yuan, GDP per capita 7582 yuan. Its economic strength ranks the second largest in Yunnan.

Climate

Climate of Qujing is the seasonal subtropical climate of plateau type. The temperature difference here between day and night is obvious. Its annual temperature averages at 14.5˚C with the highest temperature around 18˚C -27˚C in summer, and the lowest temperature around 2˚C -10˚C in winter. There are 224 frost-free days here and its rainfall per annum is 600-1816 millimeters with 1917.4-hour sunshine per annum.

         

Picturesque Scenery

The beautiful natural scenery, multitudinous historical relics and strong flavored cultures and customs of the ethnic minorities add up to Qujing’s varied tourist resources. Qujing offers an abundance of tourist sites and attractions like the two steles with calligraphic value----the Sinior Cuan (Cuan Longyan) and the Junior Cuan (Cuan Baozi), highly hailed as “best calligraphy” and “treasure of the steles in south China”, ancient fossil fish dating back 410 million years, relics at Dahe of the Old Stone Age, the “carbonized rice” of 3000 years ago. Such historical events have taken place here as the opening and first developing of Yunnan by Zhuang Qiao, a general of the Chu Kingdom in the Warring States Period (776-470 B.C.), construction of “Wu Chi Dao” in the Qin Dynasty, an approximately 1.5-meter-wide road by modern measurement, capture and release of Meng Huo in seven consecutive battles, a local tribal chief in the present Qujing by Zhuge Liang, a statesman and strategist in the State of Shu during the period of the Three Kingdoms (220-265 A.D.). in Panjiang Kao (Investigation of Panjiang), Xu Xiake, a famous traveler of the Ming Dynasty, pointed out that the Pearl River originates from MaxiongMountain in Zhanyi, Qujing and spoke highly of the geographic wonder of a stream from Maxiong running into three rivers. The trickling stream gives birth to the splendid history and culture in the south and the flourish of Pearl River Delta. The Red Army passed through Qujing twice during the Long March and Mao Zedong, late chairman of China wrote the line “the majestic Wumeng roll by, globules of clay”. Qujing boasts three AAAA-grade scenic spots. Tourists from home and abroad are fascinated with the many majestic mountains, like Mt. Wumeng, Mt. Maxiong, etc., the numerous beautiful rivers, like the Niulan River, the Duoyi River, etc., the splendors of the Rape Flowers Sea, Lubuge Three Minor Gorges, and the Nine-dragon Waterfalls in Luoping, the Source of the Pearl River in Zhanyi, the Colored Sand Forest in Luliang, the places of historical interests in Huize and the tourist festivals, such as the Luoping Rape Blossom Tourist Festival, the Luliang International Sand Sculpture Festival, the Zhanyi Source-of-the-Pearl-River Tourist Festival, and the Xuanwei Ham-culture Festival.

Rich Natural Resources

Hydropower: More than 80 rivers running across Qujing belong in either the Yangtze River system or the Pearl River system, moistening over 100m2 around.

Biological Resources: There are 3,955 kinds of seed plants, 178 kinds of edible plants, 973 kinds of medicinal plants, 236 kinds of plants for industry development and 285 kinds of ornamental plants. 31 kinds out of the above are under state protection. In addition there are tens of edible fungi.

Mineral Deposits: Among the known minerals, 30 have been found valuable to exploitation. The recoverable deposits of coal are 8.58 billion tons, 36% that of the province. 4.6 billion tons are promising after detailed exploration; the future deposits are 27.2 billion tons, about 51% or more than that of the province. Laochang, a colliery in Fuyuan, famous for its high-quality anthracite, comes to be known as the “largest coal mine to the south of the Yangtze River”. It has been estimated that the reserves of heavy spar are 0.339 billion tons; the prognostic reserves of phosphorus 6.3 billion tons, the known reserves 1 billion tons, one third that of or the second place in the province; iron ore 34 million tons, the 8 place of the province; the reserves of troilite 355 million tons, and limestone for cement 447 million tons, both taking the fist place in the province; coal-bed gas 50 billion m3; natural gas 18 billion m3; lead, zinc and rare metals are 3.6 million tons and future deposits 8 million tons, taking the second place in Yunnan.

Solid Industrial Foundation

Qujing has a solid industrial foundation complete with various branches of industries. An industrial system has shaped up with coal, electricity, machinery, textile, metallurgy, chemicals, building and materials, and food processing as its pillars. The industrial output value in 2006 is 63.34 billion yuan. The added value is 16.87 billion yuan. The output volumes of staple products are as follows: raw coal 36.48 million tons, coke 8.296 million tons, cigarettes 46.74 billion sticks, electricity generated 28.54 billion KWh, yellow phosphorus 70 thousand tons, cement 4.604 million tons, vehicles 35.5 thousand, pig iron 1.763 million tons, synthetic ammonia 471 thousand tons.

Broad Agricultural Prospect

Qujing is the largest base for the production of high-quality tobacco in Asia and functions as an important base in Yunnan for grain, oilseed, husbandry, and the production of silkworm cocoon. The land resources total 43.305 million mu(1mu=667 square meters), 20% of which is arable land and 50% grassland and timberland. In 2006 its agricultural output value is 16.3 billion yuan. The added value is 1.88 billion yuan. The output volumes of staple products are as follows: the total grain yield is 2.065 million tons, tobacco 179 thousand tons, oilseed 98 thousand tons, vegetable products 1.47 million tons, number of pigs for slaughter 4.739 million, goat and sheep on hand 1.583 million, meet output 0.735 million tons.

Science, Technology and Education

      There are 3 universities, 7 secondary technical schools and 12 vocational schools. Qujing No. 1 Middle School has taken the lead in Yunnan in the national college entrance examinations. QilinDistrictSeniorVocational School, whose number of students at school exceeded 10 thousand, the largest enrollment scale of the province and the third of the country, has been training large amount of high quality manpower for society. There are 8 scientific research institutes of all kinds with approximately 91,600 professionals.


      Efficient and Convenient Financial Service

      A diversified financial system has come into being, based on central bank, professional banks, commercial banks and non-banking financial setups. Among the municipality’s 534 financial setups, 5 ones deal with business concerning foreign currency and 2 securities offices.


      Dwelling Environment Bettered

      For its “optimized environment, developed economy, guaranteed public security, civilized social atmosphere, comfortable life”, Qujing ranks among the “Top 10 Dwelling Friendly Cities” of China, in “2005 (the 4th) and 2006 (the 5th) City Competitiveness List of China”, which was hosted by China City Competitiveness Research Association. Qujing is just second in city size to Kunming in YunnanProvince. Qujing has 35 star-level hotels, 12 of which being three-star-leveled, 18 two-star-leveled and 5 one-star-leveled. Distributed in the urban area and towns are villas and commercial houses with beautiful surroundings. The tourism service system is being perfected to meet the investors’ need in entertainment, body-building and shopping, complete with hot-spring vocational resort, tennis courts, bowling halls, commercial plazas, stadiums, cultural palaces, and various marketplaces.
